Beth Novak is originally from Wisconsin, where she went to UW Stout and got a degree in Studio Art, with a concentration in art metals. She has lived in Minnesota since graduating in the 80’s.
Novak works with enamel on copper and sterling silver. She loves to explore texture and color – and finds that both silver and enamel on copper really allows her to do so.
The copper is formed before enameling to give the piece tremendous depth. She uses lead-free enamels, fired at about 1500 º, using a torch or kiln. Often, graphite is used to add drawn details.
The settings for the enamel are fabricated using sterling silver. Many of the textures in the surface of the silver that happen as a result of working the metal are left intact. The patina used is quite durable and has a wonderful depth of color.
Beth was raised in a very artistic home, and grew up believing you could look at just about anything as inspiration! Today she still gleans her ideas from observing the world around her.
