Our First show of 2020 will feature new work by Illinois based ceramic artist Delores Fortuna. Her show opens January 10th, 2020, with an artist reception from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Here is a short interview with Delores about her process and what inspires her work.
Why did you decide to work in your chosen media?
My first contact with clay was an elective humanities class at the University of Chicago with Ruth Duckworth. When the throwing on the wheel was introduced, I was enthralled. I experienced the physical joy of movement thru my hands that I never had, surviving polio as a baby, finally walking without my leg braces and crutches at 16 years old.
What's the most indispensable item in your studio?
My potters wheel, currently a Shimpo Whisper Quiet.
Can you articulate what draws you to a particular form or glaze?
I’m drawn to a synergy between form and surface where both ask for the other, balancing tension and harmony.
Who is/are an artist(s) that has strongly influenced your work?
Post Moderist ceramic artists, Ruth Duckworth, Hans Coper, and Lucy Rie.
If you could have one work of art from a museum or private collection in your home what would it be?
Helen Frankenthaler painting.
